Puppy and Litter Testing
When it comes to buying a new puppy few people give it the thought that it warrants. Most people have decided on the breed and often put a fair bit of thought into this decision because it is (hopefully!) common knowledge that certain breeds will be better suited to certain homes. However after this initial "homework" very little else occurs and it seems to be the case that once a litter of the relevant breed is tracked down it is simply a case of going around and picking the one you fancy, maybe the one with the nicest markings or the one who makes you laugh with his/her amusing antics or the one who rushes up and greets you (we didn't pick him, he picked us! ) or could it be the one who bullied the others in his quest to get his mothers milk, maybe even it was the one who stayed in it's bed or the one who you felt sorry for because it was trembling at all the commotion going on.
Well the truth is nearly all of these dogs would be fine if put in the right home and handled correctly but it is not always the case and when people have problems with their dogs it is very often that they have simply got the wrong dog for their lifestyle and/or have not handled it correctly.
However it is very hard to part with a dog that has been a member of your family for the past 9 months, although many people do, and the rising popularity of rescue homes will bear witness to this, but many more will stick with their 'mistake' and so subject themselves, their families and the dog to the next 15 years of stress and regret.
IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE LIKE THAT!
Puppy testing is not a new idea but is a seldom used one to the general pet market. The idea is that you set a series of tests and score your chosen pup based on your observations to their reactions to the tests. When the testing is complete you compare the marks and (if the results are satisfactory) pick the most suitable puppy. The tests include the areas of noise/sound, touch, sight, dominance (not a good thing for your average pet home!) etc and it takes an experienced eye to judge the reactions (which may at times be subtle), so it makes sense to take along someone who knows what they are doing, in much the same way that you would take a mechanic with you to look at a used car or a computer 'geek' to help pick your next PC.
Manda has been running these tests for many years and in that time has successfully matched many owners and their dogs. This is an invaluable aid to assessing a litter whether you are the breeder or potential owner.
Remember a little thought and effort now could save a lot of heartache in the future
