I run weekly dog obedience classes on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm - 8.30pm, depending on numbers and demand. These are primarily for pet owners who would like better control over their dogs and those handlers wishing to attain higher standards and/or compete in Working Trials. I welcome all breeds (and crossbreeds) of all ages including rescue dogs. Puppies are accepted from 10 weeks onwards providing they have been fully vaccinated.
Boisterous and aggressive dogs are sometimes allowed to attend after private assessment but rest assured no dog will be permitted to interfere with any other dog at the class. Please bring this to my attention before the classes start if this is the case with your dog.
I do not run competitive 'obedience' classes, however many of the Beginners 'catch the bug' and continue up into the Intermediate and Advanced levels, some even moving up to competition standard.
Class sizes are usually between 5 - 8 dogs/handlers to each group and one instructor. This ensures some individual attention for each dog and handler.
The courses are of 8 weeks duration and most of the time run back to back but that is not always the case.
The location of the classes.
Training consists of both correction and reward using methods appropriate to the individual dog. Rewards consist of mainly titbits, sometimes toys, and praise. The most popular form of reward is food, particularly meat. I usually use sliced hotdogs, meatballs or cocktail sausages. Character and temperament are major considerations and a variety of methods are employed to ensure the best results. Food is usually used as motivation in the early stages but as the dog understands and enjoys the exercises more I try to switch the reward over to toys and increase the dogs' drive for the toy.
There can only be one handler per dog per course. This is to ensure continuity for both the dog and other members of the class. The person who handles the dog should be the pack leader. If the dog has not yet recognised one person as being the pack leader then the training will establish the handler as the pack leader.
Spectators are only permitted if they are family members of a class member and do not distract the class. Children are welcome to attend as either handlers or spectators providing they are old enough (and big enough!) to manage their dog or to watch quietly without interference. If you wish to bring a spectator please check with me first. Previewing of classes is not permitted, training only.
Hover over the Courses tab and view the relevant pages to help determine which level your dog is best suited. Most new applicants are Beginners but if you have already mastered that level you will be welcome to join a higher class as we also cater for Intermediates and Advanced. Please see Application Form for full details.
If you are interested in any of the courses then please upload your completed Application Form to me via the contact page and pay by internet banking or download an application form complete it and post it to the address on the form together with your cheque to ensure yourself a place on the next course. My courses are usually full a week beforehand so early applications are advisable. Due to a limited number of spaces available on each course I can only accept those who have completed and returned their forms and money beforehand. Do NOT just turn up!
I shall look forward to seeing you there.
I will confirm receipt of forms and payments by email/telephone. If you have not had your place confirmed then please call or email to check I have received your application before the course starts. If you wish to pay by electronic banking the details are on the application form.
Please try to book at least 10 days in advance to avoid disappointment, as I can only guarantee places to those who have returned their application forms and money beforehand, subject to availability of course. Priority is given to those who are already training with me and then it is done on a first come, first served basis.
Generally Beginners will run from 6.30pm - 7.30pm and Intermediates/Advanced will all run from 7.30pm - 8.30pm. I may cancel a course if there are not enough handlers/dogs to make it viable. Although most courses are run as 8 consecutive weeks this is not always the case, please check if this may be a concern.
